The largest Roman Catholic health organization in the United States was accused of refusing to allow a pregnant woman with a brain tumor to have her tubes tied. The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday filed a complaint demanding an investigation of the policies on sterilization of Ascension and its subsidiary Genesys Health System, to see if they violated federal regulations.
The clash comes after Michigan woman Jessica Mann's doctors had recommended her to not get pregnant again due to the possible strain it would put on her health, because of a pre-existing brain tumor. Mann was pregnant at the time. Doctors advised Mann to get her tubes tied after giving birth, but her Catholic hospital in Michigan refused to allow the procedures, citing religious beliefs.
Mann's situation just the latest to draw attention to the debate over religious liberties in the United States.
