That process known as autophagy, or self-eating. This in turn has lead to a better understanding of how diseases develop, especially useful for cancer, Parkinson's, and type II diabetes. One problem is that there are a lot of waste, toxic proteins that its accumulating. So if you can fine tune autophagy, in order to more effectively get rid of these toxic proteins, then presumably, you would have less of a medical complication in that sense.>> Commentators describe Ohsumi's work as paradigm shifting and pioneering.
He told Kyodo News Agency, he was extremely honored to get the prize. The physiology or medicine award is the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year.>>
