>> A struggle for control of Kunduz. Afghan forces clashing with Taliban fighters on Tuesday. The militants holed up in key areas of the city after entering in a coordinated raid late Sunday night. Elite troops joined by U.S. Special Forces now trying to root out the final fighters. It's the second time, the militants have taken the city in a year.

Reuters Josh Smith explains why it's such a target.>> Kunduz sits in an area that is highly controlled and contested by Taliban forces Which has complicated government efforts to try to secure the city. It's an area that's known for smuggling routes, both for drugs and other parts of the illicit economy here that helps fuel the insurgency.

It's also a very symbolic city for the Taliban, it was the first provincial capitol they captured last year casting doubts on the governments ability to hold major cities here in the country.>> The Taliban have stepped up attacks across the country, highlighting a shaky security situation and the militants' growing confidence.

President Ashraf Ghani is now getting ready to ask for more help to fund the fight.>> The United States and its NATO allies have already pledged around $5 billion dollars per year through 2020 to support the Afghan security forces. International donors are meeting right now in Brussels, and are expected to pledge billions of dollars more in economic and development aid.

And this will be key to Continuing the war against the Taliban and the insurgents, as well as trying to develop the Afghan economy.>> All signs point to troubled times ahead for Afghanistan. With efforts to set up piece talks with the insurgents going nowhere.
