>> Holding onto Canada, EU ministers taking steps to approve a contentious free trade deal with a North American country. While prospects of striking a similar deal with the United States fade. Phil Blenkinsop is in Bratislava where both deals have triggered by unions and environmental groups.>> Both deals, the Canadian deal, the U.S. talks, at least, towards a deal.

Have come under fierce protest, particularly from environmental groups, labor unions who claim that standards, for example, will be undermined, and that both these deals are being done on behalf of big business. Certainly, in the case of countries facing elections, politicians are aware that globalization is a sort of dirty word.

Ministers are expected to reconvene in mid-October, allowing the deal to be signed during the visit of Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau to Brussels. And it could come into force next year.>> The stated aim is to have a deal struck for in January. That's looking very unlikely. Even the EU trade chief said as such.

And a number of ministers said that was the case as well. And France and Austria particularly said that the current procedure simply was not going to succeed, it was best to call a halt to it and try to relaunch it under whoever is the next president of the United States.

>> Both Washington and Brussels said they plan to seal the deal before the elections. But with Britain's Brexit deadline being discussed, and Europe facing calls for a fresh start, their chances of doing so are very slim.
