At 10:30 this morning, our officers responded to a call of a gentlemen sleeping in a hallway of a local business, a bar that which was closed at the time. Our officers responded to check on this person who initially, we just suspect it was a vagrant. It appeared he was sleeping in the doorway, and our officer approached him, and we tried to rouse him.
00:00:29
The gentleman picked up his face, and the officer saw that he had a beard, and resembled the wanted poster that's been circulated through law enforcement. The officer realized that this may be the person that the FBI's been looking for. The officer then said, show me your hands. And the person went through the side of his body and pulled out a handgun, and fired a round at the officer, striking him in the abdomen.
00:00:50
Fortunately, the officer had his bulletproof vest on, which took the brunt of the round.>> Did he return fire?>> The officer did return fire at some point. The gentleman did get up and he started walking down the street, a westerly direction. I'm told from monitoring radio transmissions that he was discharging his weapon, possibly at passing vehicles.
00:01:09
I don't know who he was shooting at but at some point, our officers responded, returned fire and he was taken down.
