>> At least 61 people are dead after suicide bombers struck a demonstration in Kabul. Members of the Shia Hazara minority were holding a protest over a planned powerline when the attackers struck. Responsibility for the blasts now being claimed by Islamic State. It says two suicide bombers targeted the protesters.

e were holding a peaceful demonstration when I heard a bang and then everyone was escaping and yelling. I saw many people were killed and most of them were covered in blood. There was nobody to help the victims, policemen were looking at us, and after that I heard gunshots, then I don't know what happened.

>> The attack is the worst in Afghanistan for months, if confirmed to be the work of IS, it would mark a major escalation for the group. The militants had hitherto largely been confined to the east of the country. The targeting of the Shia protestors would also be a worrying turn.

For all it's problems, Afghanistan has largely avoided the Sunni-Shia tensions that are typical of Iraq. Changing that may be exactly what IS intends.
