>> So what's this boy's name?>> Barack Obama.>> Barack Obama?>> Even America's first couple stumbled through their first date.>> Hello.>> You're late.>> I was hoping you wouldn't notice.>> That's the premise of Southside With You, the fictional film about that fateful night in 1989 when a future president wooed his future wife.
>> You want some?>> Sure.>> Barak Obama, then a summer associate at the same firm as a young lawyer then known as Michelle Robinson. The film starring relative unknowns and executive produced by musician and Oscar winner, John Legend, a friend of the Obamas.>> You see in that moment in 1989 the seeds of who they were eventually going to become.
He was working in the community. She was a lawyer. They started working together, and they were seeing what was happening in their community.>> Reviews so strong, producers scrapped the film's planned limited release, now rolling it out more aggressively in more than 800 theaters nationwide. The positive buzz bolstered by high approval ratings for the President and an early dose of nostalgia as he prepares to head out of office.
But will the movie now make for a great date night for the Obamas?>> I don't know that they've seen it yet, they are definitely aware of it. I have spoken to them about it and other people in their team have spoken to them about it And they didn't seem opposed to the idea of it existing.
And I think once they see it, if they haven't already, I think they'll love it.>> Southside With You opens Friday.
