>> US President Donald Trump will meet Kim Jong-un by this May. That's what South Korea's national security chief said outside the White House, Thursday. He came to Washington to relay a message directly from the Supreme Leader himself. An invitation to Trump to discuss North Korea's nuclear program. The security advisor also described a commitment from Kim to denuclearization.
>> Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. He understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue.>> Afterward, a US official told reporters Trump was meeting Kim because he is the ultimate decision maker in North Korea.
He added quote, President Trump has made his reputation on making deals. A meeting between the two would be a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough in an ongoing nuclear standoff. The first ever US, North Korea summit. Kim's overture comes after nearly a year of the two sides trading threats and insults from Trump's warning of fire and fury to Kim considering a missile strike on US territory, Guam.
However, North Korea has made and then backed off promises like this in the past. It has also resisted getting rid of its nuclear weapons despite global pressure to disarm, and international sanctions.
