Their relationship broke down in 2013 when prosecutors close to Gulen opened a probe into corruption in Erdogans inner circle. Gulen has since lived in self imposed exile in this compound in Pennsylvania. Erdogan loyalists have no doubt about his involvement in the coup attempt.
