>> This photo has prompted protests from Israel. It shows the spokeswoman for Jordan's government stepping on their flag. Jumana Ghunaimat walks over the flag painted the floor of the headquarters of Jordan's professional unions. The flag has been there for years. But notably, the Prime Minister, who was with her, chose to enter through the back door.
Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday deploring the flag, quote, desecration, adding it had summoned acting Jordanian Ambassador for a reprimand and that the Israeli embassy in Amman had also issued a sharp protest. The flag was painted on the floor of the building to encourage passersby to tread on it as a mark of disrespect.
The neighbors may have struck a peace deal in 1994. But many Jordanians resent Israel and identify with the Palestinian struggle against it. Jordan has clarified that it respects the treaty.
