pope Francis on Sunday became the first pontiff to visit the Arabian peninsula the birthplace of Islam his arrival in the United Arab Emirates came just hours after he issued his strongest condemnation yet of the war in Yemen where the U. A. E. has a leading military role in the pope was greeted on arrival by Abu Dhabi's crown prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al nije and who escorted him to meet Sheik Ahmed al Tayeb the grand imam of Egypt all as our mosque whom the pontiff embraced both men will hold meetings with Francis on Monday the pope in his Sunday address said he was following the humanitarian crisis in Yemen with great concern and urged all sides to implement a fragile peace deal and help deliver aid to millions of hungry people before his trip ends Tuesday the pope will meet Muslim leaders and celebrate an outdoor mass for some one hundred and twenty thousand Catholics Francis has already visited half a dozen predominantly Muslim nations during his reign using the trips to call for inter religious dialogue and condemned the use of violence in the name of god
