>> In a highly unusual move, the White House announcing Monday that it plans to strip the security clearances of several former national security officials. Who have emerged as prominent critics of the Trump administration including former CIA director John Brennan and former FBI director James Comey.>> He's also looking the cleareances of-
>> The move target some of the most prominent opponents of Trump's outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin, White House spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders.>> The president is exploring the mechanisms to remove security clearance, because they politicized and in some cases monetized their public service and security clearances, making baseless accusations of improper contact with Russia or being influenced by Russia against the President is extremely inappropriate.
>> Reuters correspondent, Andy Sullivan.>> Typically, when people have their security clearances revoked it's because they're under investigation, because they're viewed as some sort of security threat. Not because they're expressing their political opinions as private citizens.>> The White House singling out John Brennan, the former CIA director who called Trump performance in Helsinki quote, nothing short of treasonist last week, as well as James Comey, the former FBI director who was fired by Trump last year.
And, the former number two at FBI Andrew McCabe, the move being seen by some as an effort to silence political opponents.>> Many of them are responsible for assembling that dossier they presented to him showing that Vladmir Putin and Russia meddled in the 2016 election tried to tilt the election his way that's been an ongoing turn his side, but it's not clear how much the White House has thought this through.
They made this announcement shortly after Trump met with Senator Rand Paul who's been pushing to revoke the security clearances today. Two of these people on the list Comey and McCabe apparently don't have security clearances at all. They get them revoked when they left the FBI. Also on the list, former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice, James Clapper who served as Obama's Director of National Intelligence and Michael Hayden who headed the CIA and the NSA
