>> The GOP, holding on to their congressional seats in a closely watched special election, Tuesday. State treasurer, Ron Estes held off a stronger than expected challenge by Bernie Democrat James Thompson. The tight race seen as an early indicator that Dems may be able to capitalize on Trump's poor approval ratings and party dissatisfaction among GOP moderates.
Estes edging out Thompson by less than seven points in a district that Mike Pompeo won in November by 31 points. As the race grew closer in the final days, the competition drove nervous Republican leaders to a last minute campaign push to prevent the race from becoming a referendum, even getting the president to record a robocall for Estes.
Republicans held on to their seat this time, but the margin suggests trouble may be looming for the 2018 midterm elections.
