>> The lab responsible for handling all the athletes' drug tests for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, shut down by the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, over what the group's chief is calling, disturbing technical errors. Reuters correspondent Stephen Eisenhammer is in Rio covering the story.>> So this is a pretty big decision, as things stand now, the laboratory in Rio has been stripped of its permission from WADA to process tests, drug tests for athletes.
00:00:31
And all of this just 40 days before the Olympic Games. One of our sources has told Reuters that the reason that the laboratory has been stripped of their permissions for the time being, is because there were some technical errors. The source explained that they were getting false positives, so these are tests that are coming up as positive, that an athlete is doping, when in fact they weren't.
00:00:53
It's obviously a pretty major issue, and as a result WADA decided to stop all testing there for now, until they can get to the bottom of the problem. And the laboratory hopes that this can be resolved before the Olympic Games starts.>> Eisenhammer says, the decision announced Friday only adding to concerns over Rio's readiness to host the summer games.
00:01:15
>> Of course this is a massive issue because doping has been one of the most controversial, and one of the most difficult issues facing the world of athletics and professional sport performers in the big games. Obviously, the Russian track and field teams have been excluded from taking part in Rio 2016 and so all eyes are really on this issue of doping.
00:01:36
And as a result, the spotlight is on this laboratory here in Rio, which has received thousands, and thousands, and thousands of dollars to upgrade all its equipment, to get ready in time for the Rio 2016 Games. And now it looks like all of that might be in doubt.
00:01:52
>> The Rio lab has less than 20 days to appeal the decision.
