In China a Foreign Ministry official calling Branstad an old friend of China. Branstad has nurtured a close relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, hosting him for a visit just before he became China's leader. At the same time, Donald Trump will feel that he has an open line of communication to the Chinese. And as one analyst told me, the Governor can act as kind of a human hotline between the two leaders.>> So the choice of Branstad was a welcome relief for Beijing, as Trump weathered the fallout over Taiwan which China considers a rogue province.
After Trump first insisted it was a no big deal courtesy call, a New York Times article Wednesday reveals the call was actually the product of months of work, spearheaded by former Senator and GOP nominee Bob Dole.>> I think he's gonna make America great again.>> Branstad also knows his way around American politics as the longest serving governor in US history.
