>> Meals on wheels for the 21st century, a courier with a difference pulling up at a Turkish restaurant in London to deliver an order. Ten restaurants are taking part in a pilot by online food delivery giant, Just Eat. Monday's trip is the first time the robots have gone live.
00:00:19
I'm Lucy Fielder reporting for Reuters from a very, very congested Greenwich in southeast London where from now on customers will be able to have their take away delivered by robot. And the aim is to ease congestion and pollution on busy roads like this one. The bot, developed by Starship Technologies, navigate with sensors, cameras, and GPS.
00:00:40
Starship, set up by two of Skype's founders, is also testing them for parcel and grocery deliveries in Switzerland and Germany.>> In the long run we're looking for 1 pound, or 1 euro, or 1 dollar on-demand delivery using our robots. So the cost effectiveness of these robots is absolutely essential.
00:00:59
We're looking to open up on-demand delivery to local businesses that previously didn't have access to delivery because it was too expensive.>> The bots can only travel a couple of miles so they'll just be used for quick neighborhood errands.>> The robots are completely trackable. They are also secure, as well.
00:01:15
So they're alarmed, they have radios. So if someone tries to interfere with the robot then the controller will speak to whoever is trying to do that.>> On its maiden trundle the robot's carrying a falafel and some lamb chops. Just e-text the customer a code so you won't be able to help yourself if one of these rolls past.
00:01:33
>> It was pretty simple. I just had to click a link on the app and basically that unlocked it and the light turned from red to green, lid popped up, there's a cooler rag in there that you can help yourself to.>> Six robots will be tested in Greenwich but Just Eat hopes to set up neighborhood hubs that restaurants will share.
00:01:52
Starship insists the bots won't put anyone out of a job but create new ones. If you're interested, they're currently hiring robot handlers.
