>> Islamic State's murderous show of force. Around 100 people have been killed by a suicide truck bomb in Iraq. The extremists claiming responsibility for the attack some 60 miles south of Baghdad. Those killed are thought to be mostly Iranian pilgrims returning from an Iraqi holy site. The blast targeting a petrol station, scorching the surrounding earth and torching five pilgrim buses.
Islamic State is fighting off a US-backed offensive on its Mosul stronghold. Iranian-trained Shiite militias are taking part in that battle against the extremists. IS have increasingly resorted to such tactics as their grip on Mosul loosens.
