>> Islamic State video reportedly showing clashes with Iraqi forces as the militant group tries to defend its final stronghold, battling an offensive to retake Mosul, which began in mid-October. As Iraqi forces recapture villages on the outskirts, Reuters has discovered documents spelling out what life was like under IS in the self-proclaimed caliphate.
00:00:22
Senior correspondent Babat Degampisha found some of them.>> What was really amazing about these documents, was that they detailed behavior for almost every aspect of life. There was instructions on how to give alms, religious donations. There was instructions on what kind of beard length men should have. The rules were extremely strict.
00:00:43
If people were known to break these rules then they would be punished. For basic infringement on rules, like smoking, those would be things like whipping, but more serious infringements where insulting religion and so on could lead to execution.>> A pink and red folded pamphlet detailed how soldiers should deal with female captives.

Islamic State swept through northern Iraq in 2014 and took hundreds of women from the Yazidi minority as sex slaves.>> Some of them were taking prepubescent girls as captives, and others dealt with how to deal with family members. If there were two sisters, could a single fighter own two sisters?
00:01:21
And the answer was yes, they could own two sisters but they could only have sex with one of them. So this was really kind of disturbing how they put all of these into sort of codes and justified it with religious background on how they could deal with these female captives.

>> As the offensive to retake Mosul continues apace, Iraqi officials say some residents have taken up arms against Islamic State, driven by discontent and encouraged by the advance of Iraqi forces. History suggests that until this city is fully retaken, the militants that run it will respond with force.
