>> It's election day today. But in Florida, half of the registered voters had cast their ballots by Sunday, a record early turnout. That surge isn't limited to the Sunshine State. In North Carolina, Nevada, Texas and several other states, early voter turnouts have hit record highs as over 46 million Americans have voted early according to 1 estimate.

Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, is a specialist when it comes to crunching data. And she's made an early, get out the vote push, a major part of her campaign.

>> According to at least one study on early voting, the longer period helps get minority voters to the polls. That's at least partly because many of them are lower income and may have difficulty getting away from work on Election Day. But large minority turnout generally helps democrats. That's made the whole thing contentious, the party has been fighting in some republican dominated states, where local legislatures have tried to curtail the early voting period.

In battleground State North Carolina, 9 counties that had Sunday voting in 2012, eliminated or shortened those voting opportunities this year. A key day for African-Americans, who generally vote after church services. The result, African-American early voter turnout there dropped by nearly 9% compared with 2012. Still, it's not clear how much of an impact it will have once all the votes are counted.

But according to some political scientists one thing's for sure, both parties will be closely examining early voting periods to figure out how to get a head start in the next election.
