aqi forces pushing deeper into East Mosul, recapturing six districts on Friday according to a military statement, and expanding the army's foothold in the Islamic State's stronghold. Iranian Kurdish women now joining the frontlines. About 200 Peshmerga fighting side by side with their male counterparts and sometimes singing through loudspeakers to enrage enemy fighters.
The counterterrorism service says that IS militants are now almost completely surrounded. But the territory that's actually been retaken is just a fraction of the sprawling city. The campaign was launched nearly three weeks ago. Mosul is still home to nearly 1.5 million people. The United Nations warning of a refugee exodus, saying Islamic State fighters have killed hundreds.
The militants are reportedly holding the civilian population as human shields. And the UN says they've transported 1,600 people from the south of Mosul to the west, possibly for this purpose.>>
