Russian President Vladimir Putin has been one of the first global leaders to congratulate Trump. But taking a look at the calendar, all this won't come to the fore until Trump's inauguration in January. Then he'll have to deal with a leader who, on some level, shares characteristics, a self-styled strongman.

Except there's a big difference, Putin is a seasoned, shrewd political operator, Trump is a newbie. His first day in charge might be less about pushing new foreign policy, and more about making sure America doesn't get pushed around.
