>> This mobile phone footage shows police chasing three attackers at Jerusalem's holiest site. Two Israelis were shot dead and one wounded Friday morning at the place known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Three gunmen opened fire and the attackers were killed by security forces.
Police said firearms were found on their bodies. Israeli authorities are working to identify them. There was no immediate comment from Palestinian officials. Tensions are often high around the compound that houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the golden Dome of the Rock. A wave of Palestinian street attacks that began in 2015 has slowed, but not stopped.
At least 255 Palestinians have been killed since the violence began. Israel says at least 173 of those killed were carrying out attacks while others died in clashes and protests. 38 Israelis have been killed in stabbings, shootings, and car-rammings. Israel annexed East Jerusalem with the old city and the holy compound after the 1967 Middle East War.
It regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, a move which is not recognized internationally. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the states they want to establish in the West Bank in Gaza Strip.
