>> So it'll take about four weeks for this floor to dry out, to see if it's even reusable at that point.>> As parts of Houston begin to dry out, its small businesses are facing a long and expensive road to recovery. Reuters Ernest Scheyder is in the northwest part of the city.
>> While Houston and the Greater Texas Gulf Coast region is know for its oil and gas industry, and its large medical center. Its thousands of small businesses contribute billions in dollars each year to the regional economy. Many of those businesses were affected by the storm, seeing a lot of their facilities flooded and inundated with waters.
Here in northwest Houston, you can see the White Oak Bayou, right here to my right. Now that crested its banks many feet over and inundated area businesses, including this gym right here, Body3 Personal Fitness. Co-owner Josh Beasley just signed the papers to buy it on July 1st. The storm came here in late August, and inundated the entire facility with more than a foot of rain water.
>> We never thought what happened, we didn't have the imagination for the real worst case scenario.>> Many small businesses like Beasley's go without flood insurance, unless their mortgages or leases require it. Beasley said he was overwhelmed by the looming cleanup and repair, which he estimates could cost up to $35,000.
>> So this is our reception desk, this was at the front. Basically anything that had water on it had to go, and is gonna have to be replaced. We've owned this for two months now. We've put a lot of our time, energy, effort, blood, sweat, and tears into this business.
And we're looking at it and going, can we continue even? Will we even be able to rebuild, and get it back to normal? It was really, really tough that first day, with so much unknown, and not even knowing where to start.>> Many small business owner said in interviews that they would rebuild in Harvey's wake.
Beasley says he hopes to reopen as soon as next week.>> Our goal is to get people back to a sense of normalcy, at least somewhat, just because we know after this kinda situation you wanna get back to normal. You wanna start doing the things that you did before.
You want that sense of everything being okay again.
