A recent report called it a hot spot for fraudulent claims on EU funds, which successful candidates will have access to. Around a third of the 350 local officials under investigation are running again. In the poorest area of the capital Bucharest, the District Mayor has won four consecutive terms.
He's now vying for a fifth, despite being on trial for taking bribes.>>
> I will vote for Marian Marian Vanghelie, because he is a very good man. He did what he promised to do, supported everyone and all our problems. Officials on trial are allowed to run, pending their final verdicts. But some see this provision as a sign that Romanian society is too lenient when it comes to corruption.
