The country's counter-terrorism office has opened an investigation. France has been under state of emergency for two years. It's one of the countries hardest hit by a string of attacks across Europe inspired or orchestrated by militant Islamist insurgency, some with massive casualties. Just days ago, a knife assault was thwarted at the Eiffel Tower.
Military and law enforcement have been targeted in some of the incidents, such as in June when a man died after ramming his car into a police van. Attacks in the country have claimed more than 230 lives.
