>> It's really hard for me to hold back.>> An emotional day in Los Angeles where a police officer was shot dead responding to a traffic accident.>> My tears, cuz all of us had been grieving since 10 o'clock this morning.>> Grieving for Keith Boyer, a 27 year veteran of the Whittier Police Department.

Police Chief Jeff Piper.>> And I can honestly say on behalf of all the officers, he was the best of the best.>> Authorities say Boyer was responding to a traffic accident when he was fatally shot by a gang member who was involved in the collision. A second officer and the suspect were also wounded during in exchange of gunfire, both were taken to area hospitals in stable condition.

Officials described the suspect as a 26 year old Hispanic male who had just been released on parole about a week ago. Lieutenant John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they tied the suspect to a stolen vehicle incident and a murder in East Los Angeles.>> So he may involved in another murder in East LA.

Stole the car, and then unbeknownst to the Whittier police officers when they went to pull the car over, they had a murder suspect lodging in a stolen car.>> Piper blamed the changing environment for officers, citing his department's uptick in resisting arrests.>> People don't wanna follow rules, people don't care about other people.

And it's tragic. This is a senseless tragedy that did not need to be.
