major counter-attack launched by Islamic State. The northern Iraqi oil city of Kirkuk under fire on Friday. It comes four days after Iraqi and Kurdish forces started an offensive. With the backing of the U.S.led coalition to take back Mosul. The jihadists last major city stronghold in Iraq.
Kirkuk residents hearing explosions from 1 AM on Friday morning. Militants attacking several buildings, including a power station. Crude oil production facilities escaping their ire. Eight people lost their lives. Six members of the security forces and two Iranians who are carrying out maintenance at the power station. At least eight militants died in the clashes.
Some of the attackers remain holed up in a mosque and a hotel. Islamic State is claiming the attack online. The Mosul operation is one of the biggest battles fought in Iraq since the US led invasion in 2003. Thousands of people have already fled their homes. The United Nations says Mosul could become the biggest humanitarian relief operation in the world.
