Thousands of Thais braved the rain over the weekend to pay homage to the late ruler. For many, King Bhumibol is the only monarch they have known. He won adoration over his seven decade long reign, revered by many as a father figure and symbol of unity. His son has yet to earn the same level of respect.
He's been married and divorced three times and has spent much of his life outside Thailand, often in Germany. However, stricted laws prevent any public discussion about the succession. A former prime minister is destined in his regent until the crowned Princess Sirindhorn.
