>> US President Donald Trump's plan to create safe zones in Syria's civil war has left allies and regional powers waiting for what exactly it will entail. The draft executive order revealed by Reuters only says that their will be areas for displaced Syrians to await resettlement. But where, when and who would protect it still unknown.

Russia says they haven't been consulted and Turkey is cautious. Their forces, along with Russia and Iran have held up a fragile cease fire in the country. Reuters Istanbul bureau chief, Nick Tattersall.>> Well, the Turks have effectively created what they call a safe zone in northern Syria already, by sweeping Islamic State militants out of a roughly hundred-kilometer long stretch in territory along the border.

So it's possible that the Americans could offer some kind of support to enable them to hold that territory. Beyond that it's an open question as to where else safe zones in Syria could really be created. The only other areas are controlled by the Kurdish YPG, the militia that Turkey sees as an enemy.

And in other areas, there's control from Islamic factions such as the Nusra Front.>> Turkey has conducted air strikes against Kurdish forces in Syria who receive major backing from the United States and and are a dominant force in the war. Complicating matters, if Trump wanted a no fly zone, it would likely need an increase in US or allied air power.

And any plan could mean more American boots on the ground. Authorizations long resisted by both the Obama White House and some members of Trump's own Republican Party. Leaving open the question of how to avoid conflict with Russian or Syrian government forces. If the draft order is signed, it will allow the Pentagon three months to come up with a solution.
