Some may say otherwise of course, but look past the Big Macs to what happened in 2014, and you can perhaps understand where they're coming from. Several restaurants were closed in a sudden crackdown by regulators. A move seen by many as a retaliation by Moscow to western sanctions.

>> Did this hurt us? Well certainly yes, it always delivers a blow to trust, we had to tell people it's not true, and people understood it. Rebranding is Russian, they prove a winning strategy. The company's planning to open more than 50 restaurants this year, and expand further eastwards.

It's also encouraging suppliers to develop production in Russia, aiming to have a fully Russian sourced menu by the end of next year. A move likely to shield it from currency swings and any import restrictions. The company's just celebrated its 27th birthday in Russia, wary perhaps of a quarter life crisis.
