NOISE] A
ti-government protests broke out for a third straight day in Iran, a rare show of political activism in the Islamic Republic. Amateur videos posted online showed large crowds, many students, violently clashing with police in Tehran and other cities. The protests have emerged against a backdrop of rising food and gas prices and unemployment.

The unrest also triggered a spat between Iran and the the United States after President Donald Trump tweeted his support for the protesters Friday night. And called on the Iranian government, to quote, respect their people's rights, adding that the world is watching. Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned those comments as quote, opportunistic claims by American officials and Mr. Trump.

According to Iran state TV, thousands of people also participated in separate pro-government rallies across Iran on Saturday. Those rallies take place every year, and mark the end of months of protests following the country's 2009 election.
