>> The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2016 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine to Yoshinori Ohsumi.>> A 71 year old japanese biologist winning for groundbreaking experiments with baker's yeast in the 1990s. His findings exposed the key mechanism in the body's defences where cells degrade and recycle that parts.
That process known as autophagy, or self-eating. This in turn has lead to a better understanding of how diseases develop, especially useful for cancer, Parkinson's, and type II diabetes. Professor Chester Hogg explains why the work is so important.>> I think that when it comes to, for example, neurological diseases, it's been argued that they're odd.
One problem is that there are a lot of waste, toxic proteins that its accumulating. So if you can fine tune autophagy, in order to more effectively get rid of these toxic proteins, then presumably, you would have less of a medical complication in that sense.>> Commentators describe Ohsumi's work as paradigm shifting and pioneering.
He told Kyodo News Agency, he was extremely honored to get the prize. The physiology or medicine award is the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year.>>
