A month ago, it bought Otto, a self-driving truck startup and it's applied for a permit with the US Department of Transportation to expand its trucking business, both moves signalling Uber is serious about moving in on the $700 billion trucking industry.

They've also been reaching out to truckers trying to get them to use their software and they're also just generally trying to help companies make their processes more efficient.
>> But it's not just about hooking up trucks and goods the way Uber pairs up passengers and cars. In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Otto co-founder Leo Ron says the company plans to help retrofit privately owned trucks and fleets early next year with self-driving technology that could help Otto collect the data it needs from the road.
Today with permits from the California DMV, Otto has six self-driving trucks hauling random items from the company's garage across the country, with two test drivers in the cab at all times. It plans to more than double that fleet as well. While some experts say would be at least two decades before self-driving trucks become big movers, the road to eliminating one of the America's top blue collared jobs is starting to get paid now in Silicon Valley.
