>> The US government officially accuses Russia of being behind email hacks on everyone from the Democratic National Committee to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and says Vladimir Putin is trying to interfere in the US election process. A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence saying they are quote, confident that the Russian government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations.
The statement singling out websites WikiLeaks and DC Leaks, as well as the web blog Guccifer 2.0, as being consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts and adding that only Russia's most senior officials could have approved the hacking. Email hacks have played havoc with the on-going 2016 election for months, most notably leading to the resignation of former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz the day before the party's convention, when a batch of emails revealed her and her staff openly mocking candidate Bernie Sanders.
Hillary Clinton and her supporters have cried foul about Russia meddling for months, saying Putin has been trying to swing the election towards Republican Donald Trump.>> And I
