This is the moment Gassama risked his life. Scaling the apartment block to the fourth floor, where the child was hanging on. The Malian has been nicknamed spider man for his epic climb. The boy's father had left him home alone to go out shopping, a French prosecutor said and stayed out longer than usual, because he was playing Pokemon go He was briefly arrested after the incident and may face further questioning.

Ministers say the citizenship process will be sped up for Gassama, who arrived in France a few months ago. He received his residency permit, the first step, Tuesday. Immigration from Africa and the Middle East is a hot topic in France, fueling the rise of the far right. By rewarding Gassama for his heroism, Macron may be sending a signal to left-wing voters, who have criticized the President for taking too tough a stance.
