That after the government successfully argued that the former athlete's original punishment of six years for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was, quote, shockingly lenient.

Pistorius wasn't present for the ruling. Civil rights groups have for years criticized the original verdicts in the case. Once a paralympic star, they say Pistorius received preferential treatment by virtue of being a white celebrity. He was first convicted of manslaughter for firing four shots through his locked bathroom door in 2013 killing Steenkamp as she huddled inside.

That was later increased to the six year murder sentence in 2015. The judge at the time stating that while Steenkamp's family had suffered, so did Pistorius' life and career. Steenkamp's family has welcomed the new ruling. Pistorious' lawyers maintain that Steenkamp's death was unintentional.
