>> A major shipping water way on the Ohio River is experiencing serious traffic jams and it's hurting America's agricultural giants. In October, boats, barges and ships came to a standstill as divers repaired the 90 year old locks and dam which had malfunctioned. Reuters reporter Tom Polansek was in Kentucky.
>> The congestion at this point of the Ohio River near Paducah Kentucky delays shipments of goods including, grain, fertilizer, fuel, and iron. Workers on these boats say, that it gets monotonous while they're waiting to make it through the lock. To pass the time they clean the boats. Do repairs and catch up on paperwork.
>> According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, most of the 239 locks in the US have already exceeded their expected lifespans. That's left about half the vessels that use the country's 25,000 miles of inland waterways suffering through constant delays. This piece of crumbling infrastructure threatens to set America's position as the world's top grain exporter.
Just this year delayed barge shipments caused soybean export prices to rise making it harder to compete with rivals such as Brazil. And China is now expected to buy twice as many soybeans from Brazil in the fourth quarter than it did last year, much of it at the expense of US producers.
President Donald Trump has announced plans to spend $1 trillion on infrastructure and that's money shippers are sure to say is needed to maintain their businesses.
