>> The Supreme Court, on Monday, handed a rare victory to gun control advocates, declining to hear an appeal from gun owners in Maryland who challenged that state's strict ban on assault weapons. The nine justices left in place a lower court ruling, upholding a Maryland statute which outlaws a range of semi-automatic weapons and large capacity magazines.
e banned guns include the types used in the recent mass shootings at a south Texas church, and an outdoor concert in Las Vegas. The nation's top court has not weighed in to the gun debate since 2010, when it held that local governments could not ban handguns. The justices also declined to hear an appeal asserting a constitutional right to carry guns openly in public.
