>> After Tesla's model S and model X SUV's roll off the assembly line in Fremont, California. The popular electric cars usually make another stop, for repairs. That's according to nine former and current employees who told Reuters. The company's rigorous quality checks routinely reveal defects in over 90% of the cars.
The figure they say comes from Tesla's internal tracking systems as recent as October. Reuter's Alexandria Sage spoke to them.>> Really efficient manufacturers, like Toyota for example. Only have to perform fixes on 10% or less for their cars. It's so crucial for Tesla to be making cars efficiently right now.
Because they're burning over a billion dollars every quarter. Workers described to me as chaotic environment with the assembly line rarely stops. Some workers told me in the past means that cars were built, even without windshields, even without bumpers. Knowing that those parts, when they came in later, would be put on the cars after assembly.
>> Tesla says its quality control is designed to flag and correct the tiniest imperfections. And said the majority of post assembly defects are minor and resolved in a matter of minutes.>> But workers told me that trickier cases go outside the plant to one of two repair lots.
Tesla denied that those repair lots exists. But workers told me that hundreds, if not thousands of cars are sometimes in these lots waiting for post assembly repairs.>> And all these comes as Tesla's trying to roll out its first mass market car, the Model 3. The car maker is already behind on production targets for the vehicle.
And industry expert say, the company survival will depend on whether it can crank them out in big numbers, smoothly.
