> From troubled teen to altar killer. 19 year old Adel Kermiche was one of two attackers shot dead by police on Tuesday after slitting the throat of an elderly French Priest in the name of Islamic State. Reuters' Richard Locke has been examining his past.>> As a child he suffered psychiatric troubles, psychiatric problems and between the ages of 6 and 13, was regularly placed into a psychiatric hospital where he received treatment, medication as well.
Neighbors described him as attention-seeking, self-obsessed. It's not clear exactly what role those psychiatric problems may have played in his eventual radicalization which we know happened over a very short space of time in 2015. His mother spoke to a Swiss paper last year and she put the trigger down to the militant attack on the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
She said that after this time he became obsessed. The word she used in fact was bewitched by hardline ideology. He first tried to go to Syria in March 2015. The authorities were alerted to his disappearance by his family. And a day after this alert, he was intercepted in Germany and returned to France at which point he was put under judicial surveillance.
But he still managed to slip the net and again, made another effort to reach Syria two months later in May. At this point, the French authorities held him in detention for nine months until March of this year. At which point a judge decided that he was fit for release pending trial as long as he was monitored.
But as we found out, that wasn't enough to stop him at launching an attack inside France itself.
