>> NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game, drawing boos from some fans and outrage on social media, but getting support from his team. A former starter who led the San Francisco 49ers to the Superbowl, Kaepernick, now a back up, said his refusal to stand for the Star Spangled Banner was a statement about racial injustice.
He later told NFL media quote, I'm not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. After an online uproar, the 49ers defending Kaepernick's right to protest.
Saying that quote, in respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem. The NFL Saturday clarifying the players are not required to stand for the national anthem.
