>> Authorities searching for an American and an Australian kidnapped by gunmen in Afghanistan. Officials saying Monday that the pair, believed to work for a university in Kabul, were taken by four or five men reportedly wearing Afghan military uniforms while driving in the capital city. It wasn't immediately clear who is responsible for the abduction.
>> It's a very unfortunate incident that has happened. At this stage we're not able to talk about details of our police effort and how they take up this issue and this case but everybody is trying their best to make sure that there is a safe release of these individuals.
>> The US State Department said it was aware of reports an American was missing but offered no additional information. The Australian Embassy in Kabul confirmed one of its citizens had apparently been kidnapped. An official reiterating a warning against travel to Afghanistan because of the, quote, extremely dangerous security situation.
Kidnapping is a major problem in the country with a number of foreigners abducted in recent years. In June, Afghan police began advising expats in Kabul to travel with guards or avoid leaving their homes.
