byan troops on the verge of retaking Sirte. Hammered by US airstrikes and Libyan troops, Islamic State fighters are now surrounded in the city center. This was the most important base for IS outside Syria and Iraq. But defeat here may not mean an end to the Jihadist threat in Libya, according to Reuters' Aidan Lewis with Libyan forces in Sirte.
>> This battle is gonna continue until Sirte is taken. But it's not clear that the threat from Islamic State will go away after that happens because many fighters, including some senior leaders, are thought to have escaped near the beginning of the battle, and there are already sleeper cells from Islamic State in other Libyan towns and cities.
>> Libyan intelligence suspecting hundreds of fighters and a dozen commanders managed to slip away. But enough remain, and although they're cornered the fight is not over. A change of tactic seeing IS resorting to suicide car bombs, killing 12 and wounding 60 Libyan army soldiers on Thursday. A UN report warning this could be repeated in Tripoli if Islamic State's allowed to regroup west of the capital.
