>> Wild fire sweeping into the capitol of Portugal's Madeira Island, leaving buildings and lives ruined in its wake. At least three people have died and more than 1,000 forced to seek temporary shelter, as the fire spread to the city of Funchal. The forest fire started in a summer heat wave, and fanned by strong winds, have destroyed at least 40 homes and a hotel.
Authorities say the blaze in the capital is mostly under control. But with several fires ranging elsewhere for a third day, the skies could be engulfed for some time to come.
