>> This is Madeira ablaze. The island, normally a top tourist spot for Portugal, now struggling to contain a wildfire that has engulfed over 200 buildings in its largest city, 1 of 200 other blazes raging across the country that have killed at least 4. On Madeira, a thousand have been evacuated, many tourists, who crowded the airport.
This woman from Germany said the fire came right up to her hotel.>> Everywhere were people with masks, and they were crying and they had pets under their arms and running down to the harbor. It was crazy.>> Portugal's prime minister vows to rebuild the resort town. Summer forest fires are common in Portugal, but high temperatures and strong winds have complicated efforts to contain them this year.
Authorities say the blaze on Madeira is dying down, but they still have much to do on this island and the mainland.
