>> A literal moonshot from SpaceX. CEO Elon Musk says SpaceX plans to fly two private citizens around the moon next year, using a spaceship under development for NASA astronauts, and a heavy-lift rocket that has not yet flown. The two paying customers unsurprisingly plunking down, quote, a significant deposit for the moon mission.
In a statement Monday, SpaceX saying that quote, like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all mankind. Driven by a universal human spirit of exploration. Training begins later this year. It would be the first ever privately funded tourist flight beyond the International Space Station.
We don't yet know how much it'll cost or who will go. CEO Musk would only elaborate that it was, quote, nobody from Hollywood. The company calling the mission, quote, an important milestone, as SpaceX works towards its ultimate goal of transporting humans to Mars.
