Russian ambassador to Turkey shot and killed in Ankara. Russia's RIA News Agency reporting Andrei Karlov died of his wounds following the attack on Monday His attacker, a lone gunman opening fire in an arts gallery, shouting, don't forget Aleppo. Witnesses say he was smartly dressed in black suit and tie, standing behind the ambassador as he made a speech.
Local media reporting that the gunman was what they called neutralized after the attack. Ankara now stepping up security around the embassy. Russia and Turkey back opposing sides in the Syrian war. The Kremlin is a close ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Its air strikes instrumental in helping Syrian forces quell rebel resistance in the northern city of Aleppo.
The attack marks one of the most serious spillovers of the conflict into Turkey.
