>> Our arrivals are tough, they're tenacious and committed to the long-term, but so are we.>> Laying out a new US National Security Strategy, President Donald Trump on Monday called out China and Russia as top US competitors for global influence, and vowed to pursue a policy up quote, principle realism on the world stage.
00:00:21
>> We also face rival powers Russia and China that seek to challenge American influence values and wealth.>> Trump's signaling the adminstration's worriness despite his own attempts to build closer relations with Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin. Speaking by phone to Putin twice just in the past several days.
00:00:43
>> And while we seek such opportunities of cooperation, we will stand up for ourselves, and we will stand up for our country like we have never stood up before.>> Reporter Warren Strobel is following the story.>> The strategy reflects the divide that really exists within the Trump Administration about US National Security Strategy.
00:01:06
You have people like Secretary of State Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Mattis and now that is who are much more skeptical of Russia's intentions, China's intentions, more willing to work with allies perhaps. And then you have Trump himself, and some of his more nationalist advisers who have a expressed different view.
00:01:24
So then there's this really intense divide.>> US Intelligence agencies blame Russia for meddling in the 2016 Presidential elections.>> We must compete with every instrument of our national power. The White House said the strategy is the end result of months of deliberations and reflects Trumps's America first priorities in securing the US homeland, rebuilding the military, projecting strength abroad, and pursuing more favorable terms with trading partners.
00:01:50
>> Important also to focus on what's in the speech and what's not in the strategy. There's no mention of climate change as a national security a priority, and there's also no mention of the long time desire to reduce and even eliminate US nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons worldwide.
00:02:04
>> Trump has vowed to withdraw the United States from the Powers Climate Accord unless changes are made. Strategy also cites North Korea, Iran, and Islamist militant groups as threats to US interests.
