>> The US on Monday hit three Russian individuals and five firms with new sanctions accusing them of cyber-attacks against the United States and its allies. The Treasury Secretary accused the Russian groups of working with Moscow's military and intelligence agencies. The statement described Russia targeting under water cables, quote, which carry the bulk of the world's telecommunications data.

Russia's alleged cyber attacks include the NotPetya ransomware attack last year that spread across Europe, Asia and the Americas and attempts to hack the US energy grid. US intelligence agencies have also said Russia used active measures, particularly on social media, to sway the 2016 elections toward Donald Trump. Russia denies the accusation of election meddling.
