explosion killing 12 people and injuring dozens more Friday night in the Philippines. The blast took place at a market outside a high end hotel in Davao, hometown of the nations controversial newly elected president Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte was visiting Davao as he often does on weekends and was not hurt.
He stunned the world with his election in May with promises to get tough on the war on drugs. His rise has prompted a spike in drug related killing with more than 2,000 people being killed in the two months since he took office. Almost half of them in police operations.
Davao is located in Mindanao, an island in the southern Philippines home to Abu Sayyaf, a rebel group loosely linked to ISIS. No one has so far claimed responsibility for Friday night's explosion.
